Knock At The Cabin

Story: Four strangers take a family hostage while on vacation in a far-flung cabin in the woods. The captors then reveal that they are there to save the world from an imminent apocalypse and one of the family members must be sacrificed.
Review: “Knock at the Cabin” only confirms that the freefall of M. Night Shyamalan as a filmmaker is still on. This time Shyamalan veers into the ‘end of the world’ territory and the outcome is hardly gratifying. His latest film is a thriller with aspects of Biblical apocalyptic elements, but you somehow leave the theatre unimpressed. In addition to being a full departure from his previous works, “Knock at the Cabin” is also an aberration in the sense that the plot offers no twists – a trait that has defined most of his earlier works. This film, which has been shot at a single location, neither delivers an apocalyptic feel nor is able to hold viewers’ interest.
The film begins when Leonard makes friends with Wen and gradually manages to enter the holiday home where he holds Wen’s parents, a same-sex couple named Eric and Andrew, hostage. Redmond, Ardiane, and Sabrina help Leonard with his work. Midway, Leonard confesses that they are in the cottage to prevent the end of the world and that one family member must be sacrificed to do it. When Redmond is killed by his own members, followed by Ardiane, things become murkier. A lengthy talk between the captors and the hostages reveals a lot more.
This film is superficial and shallow. A secluded cottage in the woods inhabited by just three people who later are taken hostage – the very premise gives numerous possibilities to thrill and chill viewers but this film sadly lacks any. Even though the hostages are armed with terrifying weaponry, neither the viewers nor the captives feel any fear. The film also delves into the realm of psychological mind games but the screenplay does no justice to those sequences. The only interesting parts of the movie are the flashback scenes that highlight moments from Eric and Andrews’ past. A major part of the film involves tense situations, but they are occasionally effective and turn out hollow.
In the cast, Dave Bautista’s Leonard, who is determined to complete the task, manages to make an impression. Despite having the advantage of “physicality,” he plays it cool and comes across as a mature individual. Another role that leaves an impression is the one played by Kristen as Wen, the family’s young daughter. Her opening scenes with Bautista are incredibly touching. This thriller, which is based on a Paul Tremblay novel, leaves many questions unanswered that will undoubtedly be on viewers’ minds. Why Wen’s family was chosen to make the sacrifice has not been explained. Additionally, the narrative omits explaining the history of the house invaders.
“Knock at the Cabin” is not a dull movie, but some of its more “preachy” aspects are certainly annoying. It’s a movie that reveals a side of Shyamalan that hasn’t been seen before, but regrettably, it does nothing to help his flagging career. If there is one consolation that ardent Shyamalan fans can take from this thriller, it is that this film is an improvement over his earlier failures.
